Kouroussa, also spelled Kurussa, is a town located in northeastern Guinea. It serves as the capital of the Kouroussa Prefecture and had a recorded population of 39,611 as of 2014.
The town has historically functioned as an important trade center and river port dating back to at least the time of the Mali Empire. Its strategic location near the upstream limit of navigation on the Niger River made it a significant crossroads for people and goods traveling between the Guinea coast, the western Soudan states, and the Niger River valley.
Kouroussa and its surrounding region are recognized as a center of Malinke culture. The area is specifically noted for its long-standing tradition of Djembe drumming.
