Janjanbureh, also known as Jangjangbureh, is a town located in eastern Gambia on Janjanbureh Island, which is also referred to as MacCarthy Island. Situated within the Gambia River, the settlement was founded in 1823.
The town serves as the capital of the Janjanbureh district and the Janjanbureh Local Government Area. It was known as Georgetown until 1995, at which point it became the second largest town in the country. According to the 2013 population census, the Janjanbureh Local Government Area had a population of 127,333.
