Yamen

Ghana

Yamen refers to the administrative office or residence of a local bureaucrat or mandarin within imperial China, Korea, and Vietnam. It serves as a designation for any governmental office or body headed by a mandarin at any level of government, ranging from the offices of one of the Six Ministries to a prefectural magistracy.

While the term has been utilized in China for centuries, it first appeared in the English language during the Qing dynasty. The concept encompasses both specific residential structures and broader governmental entities governed by officialdom.
