Bolgatanga, colloquially known as Bolga, is the capital city of the Upper East Region in Ghana. It serves as the administrative center for the Bolgatanga Municipal and is situated within the Red Volta Valley. The city is located approximately 161 km (100 mi) north of Tamale and shares a northern border with Burkina Faso.
The geography of the region is defined by the White Volta and the cliffs of the southern Gambaga escarpment, which form the southern boundary of the Upper East Region. The local population is composed of several ethnic groups, including the Frafra, Daghati, Akan, Ewe, and Ga-Adangbe. The current mayor of the town is Rex Asanga.
