Kumasi is a city located in the Ashanti Region of Ghana and serves as the capital of both the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly and the region itself. Situated in a rain forest area near Lake Bosomtwe, it lies approximately 200 kilometres (120 mi) from the national capital, Accra.
As of the 2021 census, Kumasi is the second largest city in Ghana with a population of 443,981. The city experiences a tropical savanna climate characterized by two rainy seasons that vary in intensity. The primary ethnic groups residing in the city include the Asante, Dagombas, Mole-Dagbon, and Ewe.
The metropolitan area is currently led by Mayor Ofori-Agyeman Boadi as of 2025.
