Accra is the capital and largest city of Ghana. It is situated on the southern coast along the Gulf of Guinea, which is part of the Atlantic Ocean. The city serves as the primary administrative center for the nation.
The territory historically known as Accra was divided in 2008 into 13 local government districts. This includes 12 independent municipal districts and the reduced Accra Metropolitan District. While the larger area formerly defined as Accra contained approximately 1,782,150 inhabitants as of the 2021 census, only the smaller Accra Metropolitan District is officially granted city status as the "City of Accra."
The Greater Accra Region, which encompasses the capital and surrounding areas, covers a total area of 3,245 km2. As of the 2021 census, this region had a population of 5.46 million people.
