Sukhumi, also known as Sokhumi, is the capital and largest city of Abkhazia, a partially recognized state situated on the eastern coast of the Black Sea. Located within a wide bay, the city has been under the control of Abkhazia since the Abkhazian war occurred between 1992 and 1993. While most countries consider the region to be part of Georgia, it maintains its own administrative status.
The city serves as a significant transportation and commercial hub, functioning as a port, a major rail junction, and an airport. It is also a member of the International Black Sea Club. Due to its semitropical climate, Sukhumi is a well-known holiday resort featuring beaches, sanatoriums, and mineral-water spas.
