Porthmadog is a coastal town and community located in the Eifionydd area of Gwynedd, Wales, within the historic county of Caernarfonshire. It is situated approximately 20 miles south of Caernarfon and lies near several other communities, including Borth-y-Gest, Morfa Bychan, and Tremadog.
Originally known as Portmadoc until 1972 and referred to locally as Port, the town developed significantly during the 19th century as a port for local slate. Following a decline in trade, it transitioned into a center for shopping and tourism. The area is notable for its proximity to Snowdonia National Park and the Ffestiniog Railway, and it served as the host site for the 1987 National Eisteddfod.
