Merthyr Tydfil is the primary town located within the Merthyr Tydfil County Borough in Wales, United Kingdom. It is situated approximately 23 miles (37 km) north of Cardiff and is frequently referred to simply as Merthyr.
The name of the town is derived from Tydfil, the daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog. According to local legend, she was killed by pagans at this location around 480 CE. While "Merthyr" translates to "martyr" in modern Welsh, in this specific context, it refers more closely to the Latin term martyrium, signifying a place of worship constructed over the relics of a martyr.
