Briton Ferry is a town and community located in the county borough of Neath Port Talbot, Wales. Historically, it was referred to by the Normans as La Brittonne, and records from 1540 identify it as Britanne Fery.
The name of the settlement may be derived from several sources. One interpretation suggests the Welsh name refers to a church, llan, that is protected from the wind, awel. Another possibility links the name to Saul, suggesting St Paul once landed at the location. Additionally, an alternative and currently unused Welsh name for the area is Rhyd y Brython, which translates directly to Briton Ferry.
