Rutherglen is a town located in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is situated immediately south-east of Glasgow, approximately three miles from the city, and lies directly south of the River Clyde.
Historically, Rutherglen existed as a separate Lanarkshire burgh. In 1975, it lost its own local council and became an administrative component of the City of Glasgow District within the Strathclyde region. The town was subsequently reallocated to the South Lanarkshire council area in 1996.
