Haddington is a town located in East Lothian, Scotland, situated approximately 17 miles east of Edinburgh. The name of the settlement is derived from Anglo-Saxon origins, dating back to the sixth or seventh century AD when the region was integrated into the Kingdom of Bernicia. During the tenth century, the area became part of Scotland after being ceded by Edgar, King of England.
The town received burgh status during the reign of David I (1124–1153), becoming one of the earliest settlements to be designated as a Royal Burgh. This status provided Haddington with specific trading rights, which facilitated its development into a prominent market town within the Lothian region.
