Craigavon is a planned settlement located in north County Armagh, Northern Ireland. Established in 1965, the area was named in honor of James Craig, the first Prime Minister of Northern Ireland. It was originally intended to serve as the heart of a new linear city that would incorporate the neighboring towns of Lurgan and Portadown, though this specific plan was largely abandoned.
The urban area is characterized by its unique layout, where motor vehicles are almost entirely separated from pedestrians and roundabouts are used extensively. Unlike traditional town centers, Craigavon lacks conventional streets and consists of several distinct residential areas, including Brownlow and Mandeville, alongside a central district known as Highfield. This central hub houses a courthouse, the district council headquarters, and a large shopping center.
The settlement is situated beside a pair of artificial lakes that serve as a public park and wildlife haven featuring woodland and walking trails. The surrounding area also includes recreational facilities such as a watersports center, a golf course, and a ski slope.
