West Rainton is a village located in the civil parish of West Rainton and Leamside within County Durham, England. It is situated between the towns of Durham and Houghton-le-Spring. The village straddles a ridge that runs parallel to the A690, providing extensive views toward the west.
The geography of the area includes Leamside, which lies approximately one-half mile (0.80 km) to the west of West Rainton. Additionally, the south-western end of the village is identified by the distinct name Rainton Gate. According to census data, the population was 2,255 in 2001 and grew to 2,316 by 2011.
