Sunderland is a port city located in the county of Tyne and Wear in North East England. Situated at the mouth of the River Wear on the North Sea, it lies approximately 10 miles (16 km) south-east of Newcastle upon Tyne.
The city serves as the administrative centre of the wider Metropolitan Borough of Sunderland. It is the most populous settlement within the Wearside conurbation and ranks as the second-most populous settlement in the region, following Newcastle.
