Peterlee is a town located in County Durham, England. Geographically, it is situated south of Sunderland, north of Hartlepool, west of the Durham Coast, and east of Durham.
The settlement gained official town status in 1948 under the New Towns Act 1946. This same legislation was also responsible for the creation of the nearby settlements of Washington in Tyne and Wear and Newton Aycliffe.
