Penistone is a market town and civil parish located in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. Situated in the foothills of the Pennines, the town is positioned approximately 7 miles west of central Barnsley, 15 miles northwest of Sheffield, and 29 miles east of Manchester.
According to the 2021 census, Penistone had a population of 13,270. Historically, the area was part of the ancient Wapentake of Staincross in the West Riding of Yorkshire. The town is frequently recognized on various lists of unusual place names.
