Newcastle upon Tyne, often referred to simply as Newcastle, is a city and metropolitan borough located in the county of Tyne and Wear, England. It serves as the northernmost city in England and is situated on the northern bank of the River Tyne, directly opposite Gateshead to the south.
The city is the most populous settlement within the Tyneside conurbation and North East England. As of 2024, the metropolitan borough had an estimated population of 320,605 residents.
