Egham is a town located in the Borough of Runnymede in Surrey, England. It is situated approximately 19 miles (31 km) west of central London.
The area was first settled during the Bronze Age and remained under the control of Chertsey Abbey for much of the Middle Ages. In 1215, King John sealed the Magna Carta at Runnymede, located to the north of Egham, a site chosen due to its proximity to the King's residence at Windsor.
During the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the early 16th century, various market revenues and major manorial freehold interests in the town, which were formerly ecclesiastical, passed to the Crown.
