Chippenham is a market town and civil parish located in north-west Wiltshire, England. It is situated approximately 13 miles (21 km) north-east of Bath and 86 miles (138 km) west of London, positioned near the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The town was established at a crossing of the River Avon, with evidence suggesting that some form of settlement existed there since before Roman times. Historically, it served as a royal vill and likely functioned as a royal hunting lodge under Alfred the Great. The town experienced further growth following the arrival of the Great Western Railway in 1841. As of 2021, the parish had a population of 36,548.
