Cambridge is a city and non-metropolitan district located in the county of Cambridgeshire, England. Situated on the River Cam, it serves as the county town of Cambridgeshire and lies approximately 55 miles (89 km) north of London. According to the 2021 United Kingdom census, the population of the City of Cambridge was 145,700, while the wider built-up area reached a population of 181,137.
The area has a long history of human habitation, with archaeological evidence of settlement dating back to the Bronze Age. It served as an important trading center during both the Roman and Viking eras. While the first town charters were granted in the 12th century, Cambridge was not officially conferred modern city status until 1951.
