Burngreave is an inner city district located in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. Situated north of the city centre, the area had a population of 27,481 according to the 2011 census. The district began its primary development during the second half of the 19th century.
Before urban development, the land was largely covered by Burnt Greave wood. Today, much of that woodland is occupied by Burngreave Cemetery, which was established in 1860 and expanded during the early 1900s. The area also features Grimesthorpe Lane, an ancient road that follows the path of a Roman Rig. This man-made defensive ridge was likely constructed by the Celtic Brigantes tribe and once extended from near the Wicker to Mexborough.
