Birkenhead is an industrial port town located in the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral, Merseyside, in England. It is situated on the Wirral Peninsula along the west bank of the River Mersey, directly opposite the city of Liverpool. While it currently falls under the jurisdiction of Merseyside, the town lies within the historic county boundaries of Cheshire.
The town became part of Merseyside in 1974. According to the 2021 census, the built-up area as defined by the Office for National Statistics had a population of 109,835 residents.
