Barnstaple is a town and civil parish located in the North Devon district of Devon, England. It is situated at the lowest crossing point of the River Taw before it reaches the Bristol Channel.
Historically, the town was licensed to export wool starting in the 14th century, an industry that generated significant wealth for the area. While it later imported Irish wool, the harbour eventually silted up, leading to the development of other local trades including shipbuilding, sawmills, and foundries.
The town features a notable Victorian market building characterized by its high glass and timber roof supported by iron columns.
