Ashington is a town and civil parish located in Northumberland, England. It is situated approximately 15 miles (24 km) north of Newcastle upon Tyne, west of the A189 road, and bordered to the south by the River Wansbeck. According to the 2011 Census, the town had a population of 27,864.
Historically, Ashington served as a significant center for the coal mining industry. The area is also known for its distinct linguistic heritage; many inhabitants speak Pitmatic, a unique accent and dialect that differs from the broader regional Geordie dialect.
