Nice is a city located in the Alpes-Maritimes department of southeastern France. Situated on the French Riviera along the Mediterranean Sea at the foot of the French Alps, it serves as the second-largest city in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region after Marseille and the second-largest French city on the Mediterranean coast.
The Nice agglomeration covers an area of approximately 744 km2 (287 sq mi) with a population of nearly one million people. The city is located roughly 13 kilometres (8 mi) from the principality of Monaco and 30 kilometres (19 mi) from the French–Italian border. Its airport functions as a primary gateway to the region.
