Briançon is a city located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of southeastern France. It serves as the sole subprefecture of the Hautes-Alpes department and currently has a population of approximately 11,000 inhabitants.
The city holds the distinction of being the highest city in France at an altitude of 1,326 metres, based on the national definition of a community containing more than 2,000 inhabitants.
