Montluçon is a commune situated in central France on the banks of the river Cher. It serves as the largest commune within the Allier department, despite the fact that the department's administrative prefecture is located in the smaller town of Moulins.
The city is located in the traditional province of Bourbonnais and was historically part of the medieval duchy of Bourbon. The local inhabitants are known as Montluçonnais.
