Montpellier is a city located in southern France near the Mediterranean Sea. It serves as one of the largest urban centers in the Occitania region and functions as the prefecture of the Hérault department.

As of 2023, the city proper has a population of 310,240 people, while its metropolitan area reached a population of 813,272 in 2020. Montpellier is ranked as the seventh-largest city in France overall and is the third-largest French city located near the Mediterranean coast, following Marseille and Nice.

The inhabitants of the city are referred to as Montpelliérains and Montpelliéraines.
