Montauban is a commune located in the southern French department of Tarn-et-Garonne. It serves as the capital of the department and is situated approximately 50 kilometres (31 mi) north of Toulouse.
As the most populated town in Tarn-et-Garonne, Montauban ranks as the sixth most populated city in the Occitanie region, following Toulouse, Montpellier, Nîmes, Perpignan, and Béziers. The city has a population of 62,945 inhabitants, who are known as Montalbanais.
The town was officially classified in the French Towns and Lands of Art and History network in 2015, recognizing its cultural and historical significance.
