Blaye

France

Blaye is a commune and subprefecture situated in the Gironde department of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in southwestern France. It is located on the bank of a large river and has historically served as a significant geographic landmark for travelers moving between northern regions and destinations to the south, such as Bordeaux, Spain, and Portugal.

The site has been fortified since antiquity due to its strategic importance as a crossing point. During the end of the 17th century, the fortifications were modernized by the military engineer Vauban.
