Soissons is a commune situated in the northern French department of Aisne within the Hauts-de-France region. Located on the river Aisne, the town is positioned approximately 100 kilometres (62 mi) northeast of Paris.
The city is recognized as one of the most ancient towns in France and is believed to be the former capital of the Suessiones. It serves as the see of an ancient Roman Catholic diocese established around 300 AD. Historically, Soissons was also a significant site for several church gatherings known as the Council of Soissons.
