Hazebrouck is a commune located in the Nord department of the Hauts-de-France region in northern France. Historically, it functioned as a small market town within Flanders.
The town underwent significant transformation in the 1860s when it became an important railway junction. The development of these rail lines connected Hazebrouck to major cities including Lille, Calais, and Dunkirk.
While West Flemish was the primary language of the area until 1880, the French government mandated that French be taught in schools during that period. This policy was part of an effort to "Frenchify" the population of Nord-Pas-de-Calais and suppress their Flemish roots.
