Le Havre is a major port city located in the Seine-Maritime department of the Normandy region in northern France. Situated on the right bank of the river Seine estuary on the English Channel, it lies southwest of the Pays de Caux and very close to the Prime Meridian. The name Le Havre translates to "the harbour" or "the port," and its inhabitants are referred to as havrais or havraises.
The city serves as a significant maritime hub, functioning as the busiest port on the northern French coast and the largest container port in France. It is the second-largest city in the Normandy region, though the population of the greater Le Havre conurbation is smaller than that of Rouen. Additionally, it holds the distinction of being the second-largest subprefecture in France, following only Reims.
