Fontainebleau is a commune located in the metropolitan area of Paris, France. Situated approximately 55.5 kilometres (34.5 mi) south-southeast of the center of Paris, it serves as a sub-prefecture of the Seine-et-Marne department and is the seat of the arrondissement of Fontainebleau.
The commune is notable for its significant size, possessing the largest land area in the Île-de-France region. It is uniquely distinguished as the only commune in the region to cover a larger area than Paris itself. Geographically, it is located closest to the Seine-et-Marne Prefecture of Melun.
