Koltur is an island located in the Faroe Islands, situated to the west of Streymoy and to the north-west of Hestur. The name Koltur translates to "colt," providing a linguistic contrast to the neighboring larger island, Hestur, which means "horse."
The island contains only one settlement, also named Koltur. This settlement was abandoned in the 1980s by sheep farmers who previously grazed their flocks on the southern part of the land. Since its abandonment, only two people have returned to the island.
Geographically, the island features two prominent peaks: Kolturshamar and Fjallið. Although Fjallið stands at only 101 meters and is technically not a mountain, its name translates directly as "The Mountain," and it is frequently regarded as the smallest mountain in the country.
