Palikir is the capital city of the Federated States of Micronesia, located in the western Pacific Ocean. It was officially declared the nation's capital in 1989 and is situated on the northwest side of Pohnpei island, a high volcanic landmass surrounded by a fringing coral reef.
The city has a population slightly above 5,000 residents and is part of the larger Sokehs municipality. While Palikir serves as the seat of government, the coastal town of Kolonia is located nearby to the northeast and remains the island's largest settlement.
