Burayu is a city and special census zone located in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia. It is situated directly adjacent to the national capital, Addis Ababa.
The city has experienced significant demographic and economic pressures due to rapid urban sprawl from the neighboring capital over recent decades. Its population grew from approximately 10,000 in 1994 to an estimated 130,000 three decades later. This growth is primarily attributed to migrants from rural southern Ethiopia seeking employment and former residents of Addis Ababa moving to the suburbs for more affordable housing.
