Girona, historically known as Gerona, is the capital city of the Province of Girona in the autonomous community of Catalonia, Spain. It serves as the capital for both the comarca of the Gironès and the vegueria of Girona. The city is situated at the confluence of the Ter, Onyar, Galligants, and Güell rivers, located approximately 99 km (62 mi) northeast of Barcelona.
The city has an official population of 106,476 as of 2024, while the broader Girona–Salt urban area is estimated to have a population of about 156,400. Because much of its old quarter has been preserved, Girona is a well-known destination for tourism.
