Salamanca is a municipality and city located in the autonomous community of Castile and León in western-central Spain. It serves as the capital of the Province of Salamanca and is situated on the northern half of the Meseta Central, straddling the Tormes river. The city is attached to the comarca of Campo Charro.
As of 2024, the city has a population of 144,458, ranking it as the 46th-largest municipality in Spain. It is well known for housing the University of Salamanca, which was founded in 1218 and is recognized as one of the oldest universities in Western Europe.
The Old City of Salamanca is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Due to its historical significance and academic importance, the area attracts a large number of cultural tourists and students on an annual basis.
