El Ejido is a municipality located in the Almería province within the autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain. Situated approximately 32 km from the city of Almería, it covers a surface area of 227 km2. As of 2014, the population of the municipality was recorded at 84,144 inhabitants.
The city serves as the primary center for fruit and vegetable production in the Comarca de El Poniente region. This agricultural activity is characterized by extensive greenhouse farming, which attracts a significant number of foreign farmhands seeking employment. To improve economic efficiency and reduce labor requirements, some greenhouses in the area have transitioned to using computer-controlled hydroponics systems.
