Over 100 species have been described within this genus. Sitona can be distinguished from related genera by specific physical characteristics, including flat, recumbent scales on the mandibles, a short and broad rostrum with a deep longitudinal median groove, and dense scales covering the body. Additionally, the genus is identified by the absence of an oval scar on the mandibles.
