Galata is the former name of the Karaköy neighborhood located on the northern shore of the Golden Horn in Istanbul, Turkey. It currently serves as a quarter within the larger district of Beyoğlu.
Historically, the medieval citadel of Galata functioned as a colony of the Republic of Genoa from 1273 to 1453. During this period, the Genoese constructed the famous Galata Tower in 1348 at the northernmost and highest point of the citadel.
The district is connected to the historic Fatih district by several bridges spanning the Golden Horn, most notably the Galata Bridge.
