Bir Lehlou is an oasis town located in north-eastern Western Sahara. It is situated approximately 236 km from Smara, near the Mauritanian border and east of the border wall within Polisario Front-held territory.
The town serves as the head of the 5th military region of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR). It functioned as the factual temporary capital of the SADR until Tifariti replaced it in 2008. The settlement contains basic infrastructure, including a pharmacy, a school, and a mosque.
The name Bir Lehlou also refers to a Daïra within the Wilaya of Smara, which is located in the Sahrawi refugee camps.
