Tahta is a city located in the Sohag Governorate of Upper Egypt. Situated on the west bank of the Nile, the area surrounding the city is recognized for its agricultural richness. According to the 2017 census, Tahta had a population of 85,528 residents.
The modern name of the city is believed by Egyptologists to potentially derive from the ancient word Ta-ho-ty. The region near Tahta is notable for housing two famous monasteries: the White Monastery and the Red Monastery. Additionally, the town maintains a small but significant Coptic Catholic community.
