Sohag is a city located on the west bank of the Nile River in Egypt. The city serves as the administrative center for Sohag Governorate, a role it has held since 1960.
Prior to 1960, the capital of the region was Girga, and the area was known as Girga Governorate. During this period, the governorate also included the territory of Esna Governorate.
