Akhmim is a city situated in the Sohag Governorate of Upper Egypt. It is positioned on the east bank of the Nile River, approximately 6 kilometres (4 miles) to the northeast of the city of Sohag.
Historically, the location was known by the ancient Greeks as Khemmis or Chemmis and Panopolis.
