Nag Hammadi is a city and markaz located in Upper Egypt on the west bank of the Nile. Situated within the Qena Governorate, it lies approximately 80 kilometres (50 miles) north-west of Luxor. As of 2023, the city had a population of nearly 61,737 residents.
The location gained international significance in 1945 due to the discovery of the Nag Hammadi library nearby. This find consists of an important collection of ancient texts that have contributed significantly to historical and archaeological study.
