Asyut is a city located in Upper Egypt and serves as the capital of the modern Asyut Governorate. It is situated at coordinates 27°11′00″N 31°10′00″E.
The modern city was constructed near the ancient city of the same name, which remains located nearby at 27°10′00″N 31°08′00″E. Asyut is notable for being home to one of the largest Coptic Christian communities in Egypt.
