Mit Ghamr

Egypt

Mit Ghamr is a city located in the Dakahlia Governorate of Egypt. Situated on the banks of the Damietta branch, which serves as an eastern distributary of the Nile Delta, it stands as the second-largest city in its governorate after Mansoura.

The city is a primary hub for the aluminium industry, producing over 70% of Egypt's total output, with a particular focus on aluminium utensils. Historically, Mit Ghamr served as an important center for Sufism during the Mamluk era and was noted for its role in resistance against French and British occupations.

During the 1919 Egyptian revolution, the city declared independence through what became known as the Sultanate of Mit Ghamr. It is also recognized as the birthplace of the first savings bank in the Middle East and the world's first modern Islamic bank. The urban landscape has been rebuilt multiple times following three major fires, the most significant of which occurred in 1902.
